Luther Murkins Winsor was an expert in water drainage, and served for five years in Persia as an advisor to the Shah of Iran. He was stuck there during World War II, and was unable to come home until after the war. Time magazine featured an article about him.
That's fantastic! My Great Grandfather was such a cool guy. Also, I found the place where this happened using the map he drew- it was pretty accurate. The whole area is green farmland, now:
