I do agree that it's going to be painful. The Mormon Report showed a Washington Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/guest-voices/post/the-mormon-conversation-america-needs/2012/01/12gIQA7F8DuP_blog.html and then commented the following: "MR says: I like what this author has to say. He suggests increased exposure means short-term pain but a long-term gain in greater understanding and knowledge about the Mormon faith." So when the going gets tough, we might want to remember short-term pain, long-term gain.
